Finding your way when you're just starting out

Start with agency experience

Portrait Keyvan Nourian

"It's interesting to start by working for a big agency to understand what you like and don't like, and then be able to develop your creativity by working freelance.

This type of structure offers the chance to create a solid network, to meet lots of people who can change your life later on."

Take the time to question your skills and desires

"Before going freelance, I spent a lot of time listening to feedback from professionals via conferences, podcasts or interviews.

Β

I also analyzed my strengths and weaknesses, my values, my desires and the opportunities that presented themselves. Taking the time to ask yourself the right questions and learn from the experience of others can help you make the right decisions, avoid pitfalls and move in the right direction!"

"When I left school, I didn't really know what I wanted to specialize in. It was only afterwards that I found what I really wanted to do. It's important to remember that your path isn't set in stone once you've finished your studies".

"Enrich your portfolio with personal projects. At school we work a lot in groups, so it's important to keep up your personal practice. This is what allows you to find your artistic individuality and naturally attract projects that appeal to you."

Using social networks

"To get known, Instagram is a great tool, it's an international showcase, but it's also a job in its own right. You have to produce content and make sure you remain sincere for it to work. Today it's a real business, and the risk is forgetting that you first have to create a community and share your work with honesty and pleasure before selling anything. ".

Effective marketing to your first customers

Β

"I started out working exclusively in advertising. My first clients were former collaborators I'd met during internships or my first DA jobs. These initial contacts then enabled me to work with other agencies.

You have to besocially intelligent, and your bonhomie will make the difference between two very good profiles. It's very important to know how to make friends, because you're your own agent before you're a creative.

"It took me a long time to knock on the doors of the studios and agents I dreamed of working with, because I was afraid I wouldn't have the level. You shouldn't hesitate to do so, as these people are perfectly aware that your level won't be the same as that of a senior.

We tend to forget this, but progress continues after school, and it's normal not to know how to do everything when you leave".

Getting organized when you're self-employed

Demonstrate rigor

Portrait Agathe Sorlet - crédits : Inès Berrocoso

"Having creative and original ideas is all very well, but it 's important to be demanding in their execution. What you deliver to the customer is the signature of your work.

Dararith Pach, multidisciplinary designer

When you do this job, you have to be organized. In the beginning, I was very focused on my drawings, but you can't neglect the practical and administrative aspects of your work. If you don't, you're stressed out and less productive, which is bad for your creativity. "
