The European Space Agency (ESA ) has launched a competition for artists and enthusiasts.

Entitled " Little Pictures ", it aims to transform decades of satellite climate data into powerful visuals to bridge the gap between climate science, policy-makers and the general public.

The winner will have the unique opportunity to present their datavisualization at the2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), taking place from Thursday November 30 to Tuesday December 12, 2023. They will also enjoy a VIP tour of the ESA datavisualisation suite in Frascati, Italy.

In addition, the work of the 10 finalists will be exhibited in the ESA Little Picture Gallery.

To enter, you'll need to create your own datavisualisation using climate data from the ESA Climate Change Initiative, EUMETSAT or ECMWF, and drawing inspiration from the " Little pictures " available in the ESA gallery. The aim of the competition is to create a clear infographic around a strong climate message using this data.

The competition is open to nationals of member, cooperating and associate states of ESA, EUMETSAT and ECMWF, as well as EU member states.

The jury will consider the following criteria;

  • Clarity of message
  • Aesthetics of the image
  • innovation
  • Accessibility (use of inclusive design to facilitate accessibility and fairness in the representation of different people or groups).

Please note that the competition and its rules are entirely in English.

The deadline for entries is November 19, 2023.
