Call for applications for 4 artistic residencies in New Zealand
Founded in 2024, Villa Antipode offers 4 artist residencies. Rich in multiculturality and diversity, in 2026 it will welcome artists wishing to develop projects linked to New Zealand.
The 4 calls for applications are open until May 15, 2025.

Randell Cottage writing residency

Organized by the French Embassy in New Zealand, in partnership with the Randell Cottage Writers Trust, since 2002, this residency welcomes one accomplished French author each year.
The5-month residency takes place during the first part of the year in Wellington. Residents also receive a grant to cover living expenses and round-trip airfare from their place of origin.
The residency is open to French authors (or those who have lived in France for at least five years) who have published at least two books and have a good command of English. All styles of writing are welcome: screenplay, children's literature, comics, fiction, non-fiction, drama, poetry...
Applications are assessed on the quality of the proposed writing project, previous publications, public speaking skills and ability to run workshops.
Visual arts residency - Te Whare Hēra
Created in 2014 by theFrench Embassy in New Zealand and Massey University's College of Creative Arts, the residency for the visual arts enables French artists.e .s to conduct research and produce innovative contemporary arts projects.
The Te Whare Hēra studio is located on Wellington's waterfront, within walking distance of the Te Papa Tongarewa New Zealand Museum and the City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi. The residency takes place over a period of eight to ten weeks at the beginning of each calendar year.
The resident will benefit from a working studio, access to Massey University facilities, technical assistance and a production budget. A grant for living expenses and round-trip airfare from their place of origin are also provided.
The residency is open tocontemporary French visual artists (or those living in France for at least five years) with a recognized artistic practice, an innovative project inspired by the New Zealand context and a desire to forge new international relationships.
Applications are considered on the basis of the quality of the proposed project and previous work, as well as the applicant's capacity for public speaking and community involvement.
Film/animation/special effects residency - Cinematic Arts Miramar
The residency was launched in 2013 by the French Embassy, in partnership with Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington. It is aimed at animation professionals (character design, 3D modeling, lighting, simulation, 2D animation, XR, directing or scriptwriting...).
A UNESCO City of Cinema, Wellington is the heart of New Zealand cinema, with numerous festivals and studios, including the Weta Group at Miramar, founded by Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor and Jamie Selkirk.
The CAM residency takes place in the second half of the year for a period of five to six weeks.
Residents have access to a workstation at the Miramar Creative Centre, as well as to the center's facilities, and to all University of Wellington campuses and events. They also benefit from a return flight, accommodation in the historic Sexton Cottage in central Wellington, and a bursary towards living expenses.
The residency is open to French animation professionals (or those who have lived in France for at least five years) mid or senior, who have made a significant contribution to their field.
Applications are judged on their ability to foster collaboration between France and New Zealand, and to contribute to innovative audiovisual and cinematographic creation.
Arts/technology/science/design residency - Te Ataata

A joint initiative of theFrench Embassy in New Zealand and the Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies at Auckland University of Technology, the Te Ara Auaha residence welcomes practitioners from a variety of disciplines, including art, design, communication and creative technologies.
Residents are housed in an apartment on campus, in the center of the city, close to parks and within walking distance of the waterfront.
Lasting from 6 to 8 weeks, the residency provides the opportunity to work on an interdisciplinary arts-sciences research project, in collaboration with peers from the university, and to take part in seminars, workshops, public events, conferences and media interviews.
Residents also receive round-trip airfare, a stipend for living expenses, accommodation and full access to AUT facilities, expertise and equipment.
The residency is open to French artists or artists based in France for at least five years, with a recognized practice and proven experience in interdisciplinary work and research programs.
Applications are considered on the basis of the quality of the proposed project and previous work, as well as the applicant's public speaking and student engagement skills. Direct collaboration must be demonstrated in the application.
